A Tribute to Michael Jackson 7/7/09

We have all been bombarded and inundated with the news of Michael Jackson - The King of Pop passing so suddenly on June 25, 2009. The posts of this site has mostly been a review of yogic texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita. So one might think it odd to see this post regarding Michael Jackson.

With Michael passing so suddenly, it was like a wake up call to me (and the world). It brings the role of death very much to the fore front. It is like a spiritual teacher of mine stated "You never know when death will come!" This major event ( it may not be major to you and one could say that people die everyday) had put me in a very contemplative frame of mine. It made me so grateful to have an understanding that "the essence who one really is never dies". The gratitude to this knowledge also shows how important it is to have some spiritual understanding about life. To not let the outer impressions make one deluded, crazy or upset and depressed.

This is where reference to the Yoga Sutras comes in handy. Like the review of Five Obstacles -YS II-3 and Abhinivesa - Fear of Death YS II- 9

From the Bhagavad Gita in Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 - The Depression of Arjuna... Arjuna is crying and upset about participating in a war that his family members, and relatives will die. We could compare this to people mourning over the death of a loved one - like Michael. It is with the study of the other chapters of this insightful text that can help one keep our eye on the truth of who we really are and why we are here on earth.

A realization that has come from my contemplation with Michael's passing is that we are all instruments of the One, of that great creative force (the Self, God, Allah, Divine Creator, Krishna, Atma, etc.) We all came here in this lifetime with a gift. One thing Michael really did well was display and share his gifts with the world. What are we doing with our gifts? Do we even know what the gifts are? I want to thank Michael for being an instrument of the creator despite the human obstacles in his life. We all have them and what are we doing?

My contemplation lead me to see one of the socially conscious music videos that Michael made a contribution to the world.

Earth Song Lyrics

What about sunrise
What about rainWhat about all the things
That you said we were to gain
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth this weeping shore?

Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth this weeping shore

Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh

Hey, what about yesterday (what about us)
What about the seas (what about us)
The heavens are falling down (what about us)
I can't even breathe (what about us)
What about Africans (what about us)
I ain't even you (what about us)
What about nature's worth (ooh ooh)
It's our planet's womb (what about us)
What about animals (what about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust (what about us)
What about elephants (what about us)
Have we lost their trust (what about us)
What about crying whales (what about us)
We're ravaging the seas (what about us)
What about forest trails (ooh ooh)
Burnt despite our pleas (what about us)
What about the holy land (what about it)
Torn apart by creed (what about us)
What about the common man (what about us)
Can't we set him free (what about us)
What about children dying (what about us
)Can't you hear them cry (what about us)
Where did we go wrong (ooh ooh)
Someone tell me why (what about us)
What about babies born (what about it)
What about the days (what about us)
What about all their joy (what about us)
What about the man (what about us)
What about the crying man (what about us)
What about Abraham (what about us)
What about death again (ooh ooh)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh
Aaaaaaaah Oooooooh

Then Man Abides in His Real Nature YS I - 3

Yoga Sutra 1- 3- TADA DRASTUH SVARUPE 'VASTHANAM - Then the Seer [Self] abides in His own nature.

For the above sutra "How to Know God - The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali" translated and commented on by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood says the following:

When the lake of the mind becomes clear and still, man knows himself as he really is, always was and always will be. He knows he is the Atman. His "personality," his mistaken belief in himself as a separate, unique individual, disappears. "Patanjali" is only an outer covering, like a coat or a mask, which he can assume or lay aside as he chooses. Such a man is known as a free illumined soul.

All the previous posts of the Yoga Sutras. As you review the posts, you will see it is a continuous cycle to study to help know thy Self.

When Infinity of Knowledge Is Revealed YS IV - 31

Yoga Sutra - IV- 31- TADA SARVAVARANA MALAPETASYA JNANASYANANTYA JNEYAM ALPAM - Then all the coverings and impurities of knowledge are totally removed. Because of the infinity of this knowledge, what remains to be known is almost nothing.

Swami Satchidananda asks in this short commentary What is impurity? He answers It is like the sensitive coating on photographic film. The "I" and "mine" coat our mental film and then want to "catch' everything they see. If not for the sensitive film, you may see many things, but they wouldn't affect you, because nothing would get recorded. A jivanmukta's mind is like an uncoated, crystal-clear mica sheet. It runs through the camera and pictures are shot, but nothing gets recorded. There's nothing to process, nothing to develop and nothing to fix. That means there are no "fixations."

"How to Know God - The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali" translated and commented on by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood says the following for this sutra:

To man in his ordinary sense-consciousness, the universe seems full of secrets. There seems so infinitely much to be discovered and known. Every object is an invitation to study. He is overcome by his own sense of ignorance. But, to the illumined yogi, the universe does not seem all that mysterious. It is said that , if you know clay, you know the nature of everything that is made of clay. So, if you know the nature of Atman, you know the nature of everything in the universe. Then, all the painstaking researches of science seem like efforts of a child to empty the ocean with a spoon.

Practice in Stages YS III - 6

Yoga Sutra III- 6 - TASYA BHUMISU VINIYOGAH - It is practice is to be accomplished in stages.

There is no commentary on this sutra from Swami Satchidananda.

However, there is a commentary from "How to Know God - The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali" translated and commented on by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood. They tell us that "Patanjali warns us not to go too fast. It is no use of attempting meditation before we have mastered concentration. It is no use trying to concentrate upon subtle objects until we are able to concentrate upon gross ones. Any attempt to take a short cut to knowledge of this kind is exceedingly dangerous." An example is given of having psychic experiences under the influence of drugs. It is pointed out that we cannot get lasting spiritual benefits in this way and that " a relapse of complete agnoticism "despair usually follows .

Another example of "the Vishnu Purana, one of the Hindu scriptures, teaches the practice of meditation by stages, beginning with the worship of God with form and culminating in the realization of oneness of Atma and Brahma..."
